I must confess that I am obsessed with the vast spectrum of ocean blue colours that surround our Cornish coastline.

The sea is never just one single colour, but a dynamic canvas of cobalt blue, aquamarine, turquoise, cyan, teal, indigo and slate, just to mention a few. The colour descriptions are infinite.

These colours are shaped by the depth, sunlight, sea floor mineral content and the aquatic life. To me there is nothing so beautiful as the sea on a sunny clear day, when the ocean bed is pure sand and the sea sparkles with that translucent vivid turquoise. I immediately want to submerge myself in its depths and feel the coolness of the water surrounding me.

I designed this delicate sterling silver heart to emulate these colours that I so love and enamelled them in six different layers building each layer with different shades and tones of blue.  Enamelling is the art of fusing powdered vitreous glass onto a metal such a copper, fine silver or gold using high heat. I layer each colour onto the silver, firing the glass powder each time, using my blow torch.  It is a fascinating and totally absorbing process.

The heart measures approximately 10 mm x 10 mm and hangs on a simple jump ring that allows the heart to gently sway with the movement of your body. I hammer each heart so that the surface is concave and curves inwards adding depth and dimension so that the inward curve captures the light from different angles. The whole piece hangs on a 2 mm wide sterling silver hammered bangle.
